Naval Architect/Marine Engineer

We're actively hiring marine engineers at various levels. We specifically require candidates with marine industry backgrounds in mechanical and electrical engineering, as well as naval technologists and designers. Applicants without marine experience need not apply. If you have experience and education in the floating asset industry, we want to hear from you! We have multiple open positions; naval architect, junior engineer both mechanical and electrical, we have even created positions for the right candidate. There is a potential opening for a designer as well. We are a fluid team here that while we each have our own title and specific job description, each is responsible for the development and input of innovative solutions for a variety of clients. You will be exposed to a diverse range of engineering challenges in a fast-paced collaborative environment. 3GA uses the latest in technology and software to provide our clients with high value engineering products. You will be trained in an array of software, safety certifications and 3D laser scanning equipment to facilitate efficient and effective data collection whilst conducting vessel surveys. You will use the data and software to perform Naval Architecture, Design, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering functions within Basic, Functional and Detailed Design phases of projects. As you grow in the firm, you will build towards managing small and medium-sized projects and be required to interface with clients at shipyards and vessels across Canada. You will contribute to multiple projects of all sizes, often concurrently. You will work under the guidance of our senior staff to learn, grow and produce exceptional engineering work.

Our team is known to bring a high degree of technical knowledge and innovative engineering experience, to provide turnkey solutions for various types of clients, and you are joining that team. You also will be exposed to diverse challenges, and will use your vast experiences to present the most effective solutions for our clients. You will be responsible for producing and reviewing engineering deliverables, and all aspects of engineering design for new design and vessel refits. This process begins at concept and follows throught to implementation. Projects vary in complexity and size, from small equipment installations to whole vessel creation. You'll come to oversee the production and review of engineering deliverables, working closely with our management to lead the team in delivering exceptional engineering work.

Responsibilities & Duties

· Work directly with other naval architects, engineers and project managers in the planning and execution of technical activities on a variety of complex projects related to new vessel design or vessel refit work.
· Manage small to medium sized projects, including junior and intermediate level staff.
· Work directly with clients and project stakeholders
· Work with senior level staff and other colleagues in all aspects of Naval Architecture, engineering and design.
· Perform design, documentation development, analysis and modeling tasks using appropriate software packages.
· Review vessel drawings and other technical documentation for Class and/or Transport Canada regulatory compliance
· Participate in the writing of technical specifications
· Participate in proposal development (scope, cost and schedule input)
· Participate in various stages of the construction process, as assigned. Solve problems and make recommendations as appropriate.
· Undertake on-site vessel surveys (condition surveys, lightship surveys, inclining experiments, etc) including vertical ladder ascent and descent, accessing confined spaces and working at heights. Training will be provided by 3GA.

Education & Experience

· Degree in Naval Architecture or engineering.
· Engineer-in-training with EGBC preferred.
or P. Eng. registration, or the possibility of registering as a P. Eng.
· 5+ years in a design office or shipyard with engineering experience in refit/new vessel projects.
· Familiarity with BC marketplace for shipyards, ship operators and or ferry operators an asset.
· Familiarity with maritime rules and regulations, such as Transport Canada regulations and classification society rules, is highly desirable.
· Experience with hydrostatics and resistance/propulsion calculations using software packages such as GHS, ORCA 3D, SHCP, or NavCad, is highly desirable.
· Experience with 3D design software such as Rhino 3D, ShipConstructor, or Solidworks is an asset.
· Experience with finite element analysis and software packages such as ANSYS or Solidworks is an asset.
· Experience with weight estimating, hull form development, and structural design is preferred.

We are in search of candidates with at least 3-5 years of experience within the marine engineering sector, particularly in the design or contribution to the design of floating assets along coastal or inland waters. Preference is given to those with experience in both refitting and complete build projects. Our focus is on designers rather than sailors or builders. Moreover, familiarity with electrical ship design is considered a valuable asset.
