Re: GEA Westfalia OSE 80- 0136_ Bowl leaking
Perhaps try checking the condition of the water chamber bottom which if the vanes are worn may cause a reduction to the piston pressure, as the water is not being "pumped" correctly. Also, although you mentioned you changed all o-rings and seals, be very careful with the polyamide gasket o...

Re: Alfa Laval MAPX313 Purification setup
Just wanted to chip in and say that I never knew a purifier couldn't separate an emulsion, I was always under the impression that the high temperature at the heater (as you say around 95 degrees) and the forces in the bowl would be more than enough to perform separation of the oil and water. Reminds...

Before turbocharger temperature vs after cylinder temperature
Hey guys, got a question on the above. I was in the engine room one day and listened in to the chief grilling the 2nd on engineering knowledge, but something he said caught my attention. He asked the 2nd why is it that before turbocharger temperatures are higher than exhaust outlets, to which the ap...

Re: Oil record book technicalities
That is the way I interpreted it. The way I see it, any decrease in sludge should be a concern for someone auditing the document, however an increase shouldn't be a big deal as long as it is accounted for when it leaves the tank. This of course doesn't apply if the increase is due to a transfer by p...

Oil record book technicalities
Here's a question for those of you that have had the pleasure of maintaining an oil record book. We have two tanks that are recorded as sludge tanks and are therefore recorded in the oil record book when any transfers are made, such as to an incinerator or from another tank registered as holding slu...

Re: Used air compressor oil- how much white metal is too much?
Wow, a lot of responses to this, thank you all. I appreciate all the comments so I I'll try and respond to all of them. No recent major overhauls on this compressor. I believe it was last done over 3000 hours ago so there should have been at least 2 oil changes before I got to it since then. As for ...

Used air compressor oil- how much white metal is too much?
Hello, got a question regarding air compressors if anyone has some insight. So today I carried out a service on a 2 cylinder single acting main air compressor, 26 bar discharge pressure. Everything was fine apart from, in my opinion, the oil. I drained it off, opened the crankcase doors for an inspe...

Re: Effect of sea water temperature on fresh water production
"That's the way it always is", yeah, heard that one a lot. By the looks of things I can expect that a lot through this career! But thanks for all the input everyone, it is a little intimidating trying to change things with this being my first trip as an engineer. There are people with deca...

Re: Effect of sea water temperature on fresh water production
Ramble all you want, this is gold! Noting it all down. See, this is the problem with the ship I am currently on, nobody has a clue about what they are doing the majority of the time so I generally don't bother asking anything technical as I either get a blank look or a load of nonsense. Just to set ...

Re: Effect of sea water temperature on fresh water production
Very informative answers, thank you very much. Yeah, we have much cooler ambient temperatures now and the HT outlet is cooler by a few degrees so that would have an impact. It's funny you mention the vacuum breaker, because that is the same situation we have on here! Through my cadetship I was alway...

Re: MAN B&W fuel pump cut-off method
Bear in mind I was a first trip cadet when I saw this, but as I remember there was actually a piston on each fuel pump connected to an air supply, and when you operated a lever air was lead to this piston which lifted the roller off the cam, easy as that. If I remember it was a 10k90MC-C. Although, ...

Effect of sea water temperature on fresh water production
I have a question regarding fresh water generators. I noticed a drop in the production of the FWG as we were moving into cooler waters, and reported it to the chief. He said that this is unusual as lower sea water temperatures actually increase the amount of water the FWG can produce, and suggested ...

Re: Testing of electronic high level alarms
Well, I finally got round to taking a look at these. I took the back off one and there was a test button, and pressing it set the alarm off. I can only assume this bridges the contacts, so testing the circuit as mentioned rather than the actual probe. Haven't taken the actual probe out as we don't h...

Re: Testing of electronic high level alarms
Don't worry, I am well aware of the potential problems with electronics. Only this week I came down for the morning and saw one tank that read 150m3 the day before now reading zero, a few minutes of panic until I took a sounding and found it was all still there rather than in a big black streak behi...
